To learn and apply general techniques for improving coaching skills
To learn a model for coaching and practice its application
To develop more skills as a coach in general
The Definition of Coaching
In this opening module we review and talk about what coaching is and is not. We highlight the key components of coaching and discuss why they work so well in driving performance. Participants gain a better understanding of the coaching process.
Why Coaching is Important
In this section we talk about why coaching is important in a group exercise. This is followed by an evaluation of the skill level of most coaches in their organization, and a discussion of those evaluations and why they are at that level.
Coaching vs. Counseling
There is coaching and then there is counseling. Is there a difference? In this segment we talk about the clear distinctions between the two and why they are so different.
In this module we give participants 19 specific and actionable guidelines for coaching effectively. They are all about what to do, what not to do and how to make coaching most effective. Groups are then asked to review the list and discuss which coaching techniques are most valuable.
Models for effective coaching
Leaders often tell us that they know they should coach but they don’t know how. They need steps, or a framework they can follow. In this module, we give leaders five different models for coaching they can follow, so that they have a full toolbox when they coach. That is followed by role playing, where they have a chance to practice some of the models and get feedback.
We wrap up the session by asking each person to create a comprehensive action plan on how they are going to apply what they have learned.
